The Philadelphia 76ers are settling their roster matters with training camp coming up on Sept. 28, when they start preparing for the 2021-22 season, hoping to contend for a title.
While all eyes are on the status of Ben Simmons, the Sixers are securing one of their second-round rookie big men. Philadelphia is signing rookie Charles Bassey to a 1-year non-guaranteed deal. Bassey, who missed the summer league because he had not reached a deal, was the No. 53 pick in the 2021 NBA draft.
Per Shams Charania of The Athletic and The Stadium:
Sixers rookie Charles Bassey — the No. 53 pick in the 2021 NBA draft out of Western Kentucky — plans to sign the one-year, non-guaranteed tender, sources said. Bassey and the 76ers have so far been unable to land a rookie deal. Bassey did not play in the Las Vegas Summer League because he was unsigned.
Bassey will have a long way to go to make an impact on the Sixers, but he showed an ability to block shots at Western Kentucky. He averaged 3.1 blocks as a junior for the Hilltoppers.
