While the Philadelphia 76ers have their eyes set on a championship at the moment, they do have to begin thinking about the offseason and how they are going to handle things.
While the biggest situation to worry about in the offseason is James Harden’s as Philadelphia wants to extend the future Hall of Famer, they also want to take care of blossoming young big man Paul Reed.
Reed has completely nailed down the backup center spot for the Sixers and he has played well in the playoffs averaging 7.3 points and 7.0 rebounds off the bench thus far. He is going to be a key piece in Round 2 as the Sixers continue to work through the injury to Joel Embiid.
Shams Charania reports that Reed and the Sixers have had contract extension talks in the final year of his deal, but no agreement has been reached. Therefore, Reed will enter restricted free agency in the offseason:
Bball Paul and the Sixers, they’ve had some extension conversations over the course of the regular season. There have been offers made, from what I’m told, but there’s no deal as of right now. It doesn’t look like they’re gonna reach an agreement on a new extension. He’s in the last year of his deal. He will be entering free agency—restricted free agency this offseason and so when you look at what he’s done in these playoffs. 7.3 points per game, seven rebounds per game, 58% shooting in only 16 minutes a game. That output that he puts in in such limited amount of time, it’s clear he’s gonna be valued around the league. He’s helping himself with every game, but no extension for Paul Reed as of right now. He’s gonna go into the market, it looks like, as a restricted free agent and some of the numbers that he’s putting up, it’s clear he’s gonna get some attraction in free agency.

It will be interesting to see how the Sixers handle the Reed situation. Philadelphia has been looking for a consistent backup center for Embiid and it looks like they have found it in the form of Reed.
