Report: Saints to add TE Treyton Welch to the practice squad

Report: The New Orleans Saints will add another tight end to the fold, with Treyton Welch expected to join the practice squad

The New Orleans Saints have continued to add and subtract from the tight end room all offseason, and with a recent injury to Kevin Rader, they are expected to add Treyton Welch to their practice squad per KPRC2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson. This also comes after undrafted rookie Dallin Holker made the 53-man roster, leaving a spot open on the practice squad that could have been filled by him if this was not the case.

Welch could be a solid depth option for the position. He had a five-year collegiate career, all of which he spent at Wyoming, and he accrued 77 receptions for 874 yards and 9 touchdowns during his 50 games played there. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cleveland Browns this offseason, and with $125,000 in guarantees, he was clearly a priority target. He ended the preseason with 2 receptions for 26 yards before the Browns moved on from him in roster cut-downs.

At 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds, he has solid size and can build further on his frame if needed. We will see if the Saints are willing to develop him over time, and maybe he will end up making the roster down the road. There is still a ton of movement going on around the league as every team works to finalize their depth charts, and Welch wasn’t included in the Saints’ initial practice squad announcement on Wednesday — but two other tight ends were in Mason Fairchild and Michael Jacobson. We’ll have to wait and see whether this deal with Welch comes to fruition.
