The Arizona Cardinals would like to re-sign running back Kenyan Drake, scheduled to be a free agent when the new league begins in two weeks. However, he appears set to see what the market is and there will be teams interested in him.
One team with reported interest in him is the Washington Redskins.
According to ESPN’s John Keim, if Drake doesn’t re-sign with the Cardinals before free agency begins, they will target him.
“One guy I think they could, and will pursue if he’s free, is Arizona running back Kenyan Drake,” Keim said on his podcast. “I had one league source tell me that’s what he thinks the Redskins will do based on the chatter that you hear. Drake would be a good fit; a back who could help both as a runner and as a receiver.”
It would be an interesting move. Would they pony up the money Drake seeks when they already have Adrian Peterson returning and have two young backs in Derrius Guice and Bryce Love, although both have yet to be healthy in the NFL.
Redskins Wire’s Zachary Neel suggests Drake could be a complementary back to Peterson and still make $8-$9 million.
That would be the price range Drake is supposedly seeking but the role would be similar to what he had when he was underutilized with the Miami Dolphins prior to his trade to the Cardinals last season.
While a fit in Washington for that price doesn’t seem right, it shows there will be interest in Drake’s services. The key will be what teams are willing to pay.
