Running back James White is expected to re-sign with the New England Patriots, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The deal isn’t done yet, but Fowler said it “should be pretty soon.” White, 29, has played all seven of his NFL seasons with the Patriots and he was the most important piece in the team’s Super Bowl LI victory.

White has accumulated 369 receptions for 3,184 yards and 25 touchdowns throughout his career — while also tallying 309 rushes for 1,240 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Patriots needed a pass-catching back and White is likely the best option available for the 2021 season.

The Patriots’ depth at running back consists of Sony Michel, Damien Harris, J.J. Taylor and Brandon Bolden — none of whom have the pass-catching abilities that White brings.

The Patriots’ backfield may be set now and it’ll be in much better shape with an improved offensive line, along with a much more talented crew of receivers and tight ends.
