Randy Gregory’s story has had more than its share of twists and turns and plot twists that weren’t always pretty. But the next chapter of the defensive end’s fairytale will be written in Dallas, with the 29-year-old continuing to wear the silver and blue.

ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter is reporting Tuesday morning that the Cowboys will re-sign Gregory to a five-year deal worth $70 million, preventing him from becoming a free agent when the new league year officially begins on Wednesday.

After making just 28 game appearances from 2015 through 2019 and missing the 2017 and 2019 seasons in their entirety (along with most of 2016), the former second-round draft pick out of Nebraska embarked on his comeback midway through the 2020 campaign. The Cowboys stuck with him through multiple suspensions due to the league’s now-outdated substance abuse policies; he rewarded the club upon his return by compiling 40 tackles, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and an interception returned for a touchdown in the 22 games since then. He was also named to the Cowboys’ leadership council by head coach Mike McCarthy.

But an expiring contract also made him a hot name in free agency. Gregory’s agents were reportedly in serious discussions with the Denver Broncos as late as Monday.

Gregory’s new contract contains $28 million of guaranteed money and will keep the potent pass rush trio of Gregory, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Micah Parsons together. Lawrence agreed to terms with the Cowboys on Monday with a new contract that freed up short-term cap space for the front office to work with.

A three-year deal (essentially a two-year agreement with a team options to follow) doesn’t necessarily ensure a happily ever after for Gregory in Dallas. But with both player and organization wanting the stars to align and working to make it finally happen, it’s nonetheless a beautiful day in Dan Quinn’s kingdom.
