With the Philadelphia 76ers drafting big man Adem Bona in the second round and then signing Andre Drummond at the outset of free agency, there was no room for Paul Reed. Therefore, the Sixers waived the big man who had a non-guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 season.
Reed, the No. 58 overall pick of the 2020 draft, had put together a solid career in Philadelphia. He averaged 7.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in 2023-24 as he earned a lot of playing time with Joel Embiid missing over half the season due to a left meniscus injury. He is an NBA rotational player, but the Sixers decided to go in another direction.
The Detroit Pistons will give Reed his next chance as they have claimed the former Sixers big man off waivers.

The Pistons, who also signed former Sixers forward Tobias Harris, are still in a rebuilding phase. They will allow Reed to make his mistakes and allow him to grow through them and develop as a player.
