As of this week, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ coaching staff is filling in quickly on the offensive and defensive sides. There were two reports that surfaced yesterday about Brian Schottenheimer and Chris Ash agreeing to terms, and according to Sean Fitz of 247Sports, Penn State assistant Tyler Bowen is joining the staff, too, as their tight ends coach.

Bowen, 31, served as a co-offensive coordinator, offensive recruiting coordinator, and tight ends coach under James Franklin last season. From 2018-19, he was the Nittany Lions’ offensive recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, too.

This past season, Bowen had the luxury of coaching current NFL tight end prospect Pat Freiermuth, who is widely viewed as a top-45 player for the upcoming draft. Under Bowen’s coaching, Freiermuth accumulated 23 catches for 310 yards and one touchdown in 2020 (only had four games). In 2019, Freiermuth had a career high of 43 catches for 507 yards and seven touchdowns. As a freshman, he garnered 26 catches for 368 yards and a career-high of eight touchdowns.

Before his last stop, Bowen coached at Maryland, Townson, Penn State (first stint), Fordham, and Maryland a second time. He held various roles in the process from being a student and graduate assistant, to coaching tight ends and the offensive line.

Bowen will work under offensive coordinator Darell Bevell in addition to coach Urban Meyer. While the Jags undoubtedly will address tight end this offseason, the notables he’ll coach directly includes Josh Oliver, Tyler Davis, and possibly Tyler Eifert if the Jags pick up his contract option.
