Report: Patriots finalizing one-year deal for former Panthers QB Cam Newton

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Patriots are finalizing a one-year deal with Newton worth around $14 million.

Former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton won’t be hitting the market again, after all. According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Patriots are finalizing a one-year deal with Newton worth around $14 million.

While that’s not the ridiculous minimum steal New England signed Newton for last year, it’s still a great bargain for a former league MVP.

Newton went 7-8 as a starter for the Patriots last season and only threw eight touchdown passes to go with 10 interceptions. However, he had almost no help offensively after the season-ending injury to wide receiver Julian Edelman. In the end, Jakobi Meyers (729) and Damiere Byrd (604) led the team in receiving yards.

Cam remains a potent running weapon regardless of the pieces around him, though. He totaled 592 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns, the most in a year since his rookie season in 2011 with the Panthers.

Carolina hosts New England at some point in the 2021 season.
