Report: Panthers trade QB Kyle Allen to Redskins

According to a report by Jordan Schultz, the Panthers have traded quarterback Kyle Allen to the Redskins. Moments later, Ian Rapoport at NFL Network reported that Washington is sending a fifth-round pick back.

Allen started 12 games for Carolina last season after Cam Newton suffered a Lisfranc injury. Things went well for Allen the first few weeks and the team won four of his first five games. It went south fast from there, though. Allen’s penchant for turnovers eventually caught up to him and he lost six of his last seven starts. He was benched for Will Grier the last two games of 2019.

Getting a fifth for Allen is absolute highway robbery.

In any case, Allen gets a fresh start with Washington, now coached by Ron Rivera. Their offensive coordinator is Scott Turner, who was calling plays for Carolina in December. For now, Allen is likely considered the team’s No. 2 QB option behind Dwayne Haskins, last year’s first-round pick.

Speaking of fresh starts, the Panthers have a new backup quarterback of their own. Today it was reported the team is signing former Colts QB P.J. Walker, who played for Matt Rhule at Temple and was the runaway XFL MVP favorite before their season ended after just five games.

With Allen out of the picture, Walker is clearly QB2 behind Teddy Bridgewater. Will Grier is safe for now.

We’re still waiting on Cam Newton to be either traded or released. This news might accelerate that process.
