According to NFL reporter Michael McCarthy, the NFL is planning to allow players to protest during the national anthem this season. This means the return of taking a knee during the anthem and perhaps even more.
A lot of people are going to get hung on the notion of teams allowing players to protest. We all understand teams won’t physically try to stop players from taking a knee. A better way to phrase it is that teams will allow players to protest without the fear of punishment.
It is often confused that players have a constitutional right to protest during the national anthem but this isn’t true. First amendment rights extend to the workplace. Your employer can punish you as they see fit if you violate a rule about these sorts of protests. It sounds like the NFL is simply going to lift the potential punishments.
What do you think about the NFL moving forward with this model? Let us know in the comments.
