Report: LSU is targeting Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly

Could we have a head coach decision coming?

We could be getting closer to a head coach being named for the LSU Tigers. According to The Athletic (subscription required), they are targeting current Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly.

LSU is making an “aggressive push” to hire Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly as its next head coach, sources tell The Athletic. Kelly, who took over in South Bend in 2010, is the winningest coach in Fighting Irish history, has made a pair of College Football Playoff appearances and has Notre Dame in the mix again this season.

This certainly would be viewed as a splash given that not many had looked to Brian Kelly as a possible candidate. Kelly has been with Notre Dame since 2010. He led them to two College Football Playoff appearances and they are on the verge of a third appearance this season if it falls correctly.

Kelly was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats from 2006-09 prior to making the jump to Notre Dame. If he were to move to LSU, then another marquee job could be on the market as the coaching carousel continues to spin. We will continue to monitor the situation for the Tigers. It remains to be seen if Kelly were to join the team prior to their bowl game if they do indeed make the playoffs.
