Three nights ago, reports from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Shams Charania had a similar premise, with a significant distinction.
The ‘WojBomb’ indicated that the Cleveland Cavaliers and former Michigan basketball head coach John Beilein could part ways before NBA play resumes on Thursday post the All-Star break. But The Athletic reported that while a change was imminent, it could come at the end of the season.
It looks like the former is more likely now.
Charania penned a new update on Tuesday afternoon ($), saying that the Cleveland Cavaliers brass and Beilein are working on a resolution with a determination to have it done by Wednesday, which would relieve the 12-year Wolverines coach of his post, but giving him the opportunity to walk away from the 14-40 franchise with the entirety of his contract due.
John Beilein is in advanced talks with the Cavaliers about parting ways, sources with knowledge of the situation tell The Athletic.
A resolution is expected by Wednesday, and sources with knowledge of the situation say Beilein is expected to walk away from the remainder of his contract, which was originally a four-year deal — with a team option for a fifth — worth about $4 to 4.5 million per year.
The Cavaliers will return from the All-Star break with their first practice on Wednesday, when many team officials and coaches expect to have the Beilein cloud behind them, sources said. They are widely expected to promote associate head coach J.B. Bickerstaff to replace Beilein. He would be the Cavs sixth coach in the past seven seasons.
Again, it’s a shame that things haven’t worked out for Beilein and Cleveland, especially considering he always took a step up in every stage of his coaching career.
There’s rampant speculation that Beilein could return to college next season, as multiple teams would be assuredly interested.
