It looks like the Jets will at least consider hiring a defensive mind to be their next head coach.
After firing Adam Gase on Sunday night, New York has already requested an interview with Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Gang Green is not alone, though, as the Texans have also asked to speak with the 50-year-old coordinator.
The Colts’ DC since 2018, Eberflus has rapidly transformed Indianapolis once porous defense into a top-10 unit. The Colts, now preparing for the playoffs, allowed 22.6 points (10th) and 332.1 yards (8th) per game this season.
Eberflus has never been a head coach before — in college or the NFL — but he has spent additional time with the Cowboys, Browns, Missouri and Toledo.
While it’s interesting to see a defensive mind emerge as the Jets’ first reported interview request, the expectation is that New York will cast a wide net and that Joe Douglas will take his time selecting his first head coach.
