Report: Jets request interview with Rams DC Brandon Staley

The Jets requested an interview with Rams DC Brandon Staley.

Add another defensive mind to the Jets’ list of potential candidates.

The Jets put in a request to talk to Rams DC Brandon Staley, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The interview must wait until after Los Angeles’ playoff game on Saturday.

Staley, 38, coached the NFL’s top defense during the regular season, as the Rams allowed a league-best 18.5 points, 281.9 yards and 190.7 passing yards per game. They finished third in rushing yards allowed (91.3).

This is Staley’s first season as a defensive coordinator in the NFL. Before joining Sean McVay’s staff, he coached the Bears and Broncos’ linebackers between 2017 and 2019. Staley spent time in the college ranks as well, serving as the defensive coordinator at John Carroll University, James Madison and Hutchinson Community College. Staley was also an associate head coach at Hutchinson.

While Staley is a defensive mind, Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said Monday that the Jets will focus on finding candidates who can lead and develop. He doesn’t necessarily have a preference for offensive vs. defensive gurus. The expectation is that New York will cast a wide net and that Joe Douglas will take his time selecting his first head coach.
