Report: Jets among teams in contact with free agent OT Jason Peters

The Jets are keeping tabs on free agent offensive tackle Jason Peters, even with drafting Mekhi Becton to solidify the left tackle position.

While 38-year-old Jason Peters hasn’t shut the door on a possible return to the Philadelphia Eagles, he’s also keeping contact with the Jets, Browns and Broncos, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer.

Peters has continued to draw interest from the Jets, even with the team finding their left tackle of the future in Mekhi Becton. It shouldn’t come as a surprise considering Joe Douglas’ connection to Peters during his time as the Vice President of Player Personnel in Philadelphia.

Despite his age, Peters has continued to play at a high level. He recently told friends that if Tom Brady can play well into his 40s, then so can he, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Peters has spent the better part of the offseason working out and sending teams training videos, per Garafolo.

The future Hall of Famer has been with the Eagles since 2009 but mutually agreed to move on this offseason since 2019 first-round pick Andre Dillard is the future at that position. However, the Eagles are still keeping tabs on Peters.

Peters has been a name connected to the Jets since the beginning of the offseason, mainly due to his connection to Douglas. With New York having some cap room to work with, the move makes perfect sense from a depth and locker room standpoint.

Douglas has expressed a desire to have formidable depth on the offensive line and Peters could also serve as a perfect mentor to Becton, much like to Frank Gore’s presence in the running back room.
