Golden State Warriors rookie James Wiseman, and teammate Draymond Green, reportedly each missed the start of training camp on Monday after testing positive for the coronavirus, according to Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Warriors announced last week that the start of training camp would be delayed by at least one day after two unidentified players tested positive for the coronavirus. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr declined to elaborate on which players submitted positive tests, citing privacy laws, but Wiseman and Green were the only two players absent from practice.
“I will not comment on that any further,” Kerr said on Monday after practice. “I’m not allowed to comment on that. You can make your own deductions. I know it’s really tricky.”
According to the NBA, any player who has returned a confirmed positive test is isolated until they are cleared for leaving isolation under the rules established by the NBA and the Players Association in accordance with CDC guidance. Kerr said in the meantime, the team will turn to the next player up on the depth chart until Wiseman and Green can return.
“I know that there’s some kind of a cardiogram and some kind of a heart monitor testing all players have to go through because of the nature of the virus,” Kerr said. “There’s a period of time where our two players will be able to be in the gym and watch practice without participating. From what I gather, it’s several days between the time they can be in the gym to the time they can actually practice.”
In all likelihood, Wiseman and Green will miss at least the team’s first preseason game on Saturday while in isolation. Kerr expressed more concern with Wiseman missing training camp over Green since it is his first time practicing with the team but said he is watching film and studying up on the plays while away from the team.
Wiseman’s status to begin the season with the Warriors is still up in the air as the team could play it cautiously once he has been cleared to resume basketball activities. Teams often want players to take part in practices before getting put onto the court in game situations so Wiseman could have a slow start to his rookie campaign.
