The Jacksonville Jaguars’ staff is still a work in progress under Urban Meyer but he’ll have several coaches he’s familiar with by his side. There have been reports stating that Meyer’s former assistants like Chris Ash, Charlie Strong, Anthony Schlegel, Fernando Lovo, and Ryan Stamper will be joining the coaching staff or Jags organization in some capacity.
Per KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis, Meyer and the Jags also had interest in Denver Broncos receivers coach Zach Azzanni, who coached under Meyer at Bowling Green and Florida. For whatever reason, the reunion never happened and Jags added Sanjay Lal to likely be their receivers coach instead.
Jaguars hired new WR coach, Seattle’s Sanjay Lal, per reports.
Per source, Jags initially expressed interest in Broncos WR coach Zach Azzanni who previously worked for Urban Meyer at Bowling Green and Florida.
Azzanni is highly respected by players and fellow coaches. #9sports— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) January 28, 2021
Azzanni would’ve brought four years of NFL coaching experience to the Jags staff as he’s spent three seasons in Denver and one with the Chicago Bears (2017). While at Bowling Green, Azzanni was a graduate assistant and receivers coach and was a receivers coach/ passing game coordinator at Florida.
While Meyer may have wanted Azzanni, he got a more experienced NFL coach in Lal. This season will mark his twelfth as he’s been in the NFL since 2009.
