After a few weeks of rumors, the reality is starting to set in for UNC basketball fans with No. 1 overall recruit [autotag]G.G. Jackson[/autotag].
According to Travis Branham of 247Sports, Jackson will decommit from North Carolina and reclassify to 2022 where he will join South Carolina and play his college basketball at home. The news is a big blow to UNC’s 2023 recruiting class which had two five-star players committed in Simeon Wilcher and Jackson.
Now, Hubert Davis and his staff have to figure out a new plan and address the forward position again.
The move for Jackson is expected to happen within the next few weeks as Branham notes:
According to multiple sources, Jackson is expected to decommit from North Carolina and enroll early at hometown South Carolina — an announcement that is expected to come in the next two weeks.
He will conclude his EYBL season at the Peach Jam, July 17-24.
Jackson committed to North Carolina in April, shortly after the team made a Final Four run. UNC was considered his dream school as is his dad’s but in the end, the decision to stay home won out.
Reclassifying in 2023 and playing for UNC was an option but it was very unlikely. He would need to not be on scholarship after he denied the rumor of joining UNC’s class several times in the past few months. UNC filled their last open scholarship with Pete Nance.
Now, recruiting will pick up for Davis and the Tar Heels in the coming months.
