Report: DT Davon Godchaux agrees to two-year extension with Patriots

Davon Godchaux is staying in New England

Veteran defensive tackle Davon Godchaux has reportedly agreed to a two-year extension with the New England Patriots, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Godchaux has been seeking a restructured deal in the final year of his contract. The two sides continued working towards a resolution and finally settled on a two-year, $21 million deal with $16.5 million guaranteed.

Talks seemed to ramp up in intensity following the news that star defensive tackle Christian Barmore was out indefinitely with blood clots. Losing Barmore was already a tough blow, but the team potentially losing both of their top defensive tackles would have been catastrophic.

Godchaux was still under contract, but there were concerns he could potentially hold in with no guaranteed money left on his previous deal.

Godchaux being back in the mix is huge for a Patriots defense that ranked as a top-10 unit last season.

The team has still yet to deal with the Matthew Judon contractual issue. With Godchaux now taken care of, perhaps they can put even more focus on finding a resolution to that situation as well.
