Report: Dolphins hiring legendary CB Patrick Surtain as assistant coach

It’s a full-on reunion in Miami.

After the Miami Dolphins hired former cornerback Sam Madison to be their cornerbacks coach, they’ve gone back to the same well, grabbing another one of their legendary corners and Madison’s former teammate.

According to Andy Slater, the Dolphins are hiring Patrick Surtain to be a defensive assistant to work with defensive backs.

Surtain was a second-round pick for the Dolphins out of Southern Mississippi in 1998. He played seven seasons for Miami, earning three Pro Bowl nominations, one First-Team All-Pro, and one Second-Team All-Pro.

The Dolphins traded Surtain to the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2004 season for a second-round pick in the 2005 draft that was used to draft defensive end Matt Roth. Surtain signed a seven-year contract with the Chiefs but played just four years there before he was released.

While Surtain has never coached at the NFL or collegiate level, he’s been the head coach of Plantation American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida since 2016. During his time as a high school coach, Surtain led his team to three state championships and received the 2020 High School Football America National Coach of the Year honor.
