Report: Doc Rivers to make $8 million a year as Sixers head coach

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers will make $8 million a year as head coach.

The Philadelphia 76ers are entering a new era in their franchise’s history as they will get set to begin the Doc Rivers era as their new head coach. Rivers is the 25th coach in Sixers history and he replaced Brett Brown who was at the helm for seven seasons.

Rivers is one of the top coaches in basketball as he had success everywhere he went. He has a career 943-681 record in 21 seasons as coach of the Orlando Magic, the Boston Celtics, and the Los Angeles Clippers while winning a title with Boston in 2008.

As he begins his time with the Sixers, details of his contract have begun to come to light and according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on his podcast The Hoop Collective, he will make about the same as he made with the Clippers.

Windhorst said:

Giving him what I heard was a pretty healthy five-year contract that was in line with what he was making with the Clippers, from what I am told, which was 8 million dollars a year.

The 5-year contract will be worth it if he is able to get Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid to realize their full potential. The Sixers can win a championship with those two leading the way, but they need a coach who can get the most out of them. Philadelphia believes Rivers is the guy to do it.
