Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks is dealing with a sprained MCL, as first reported by Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
He was to be held out of practice on Thursday but was seen putting in work on bands and resistance cords off to the side with Cowboys associate athletic trainer and director of rehabilitation Britt Brown.
The injury occurred during Sunday night’s 40-0 win over the Giants at Met Life Stadium, per head coach Mike McCarthy, but he was able to finish the game. Cooks’s appearance on Wednesday’s initial Week 2 injury report came as something of a surprise.
McCarthy said during Thursday’s press conference that the veteran has “improved” since Sunday night and added he might be integrated into team sessions by the end of the week.
Grade 1 MCL sprain for Brandin Cooks, multiple people w/ knowledge of injury said.
His ability to play this week is in question, but can’t be ruled out. This is not considered a multi-week injury.

The Cowboys have not ruled Cooks out for Sunday’s home matchup with the Jets, but the injury will bear monitoring, especially coming this early in the season.
Cooks himself said he didn’t feel he would be hampered by the injury, telling reporters midweek, “If I’m out there, there’s no limitations.”

If Cooks cannot play Sunday, Jalen Tolbert would likely get the start in his place. KaVontae Turpin and rookie Jalen Brooks could also see a bump in their playing time.
