Buckle up college football fans, the College Football Playoff is going to get interesting.
A huge topic of discussion recently, besides conference realignment, has been the want to expand the College Football Playoff. Everyone has their own opinion on the number of teams that should get into the playoff, but it’s just about unanimous that the CFP should expand from the original four-team deal.
Well, you got your wish.
On Friday afternoon it has been reported by Pete Thamel that the College Football Playoff Board of Managers met and voted on a 12-team College Football Playoff. The current four-team deal is set to end in 2026, so it’s possible that the 12-team playoff won’t start until then.

But it could begin sooner, maybe.
It has been reported by different people in the national media that the CFP board would like to start this sooner than 2026, if possible. Let’s be honest, money is a big bargaining chip, and the money end of a 12-team playoff would be thru the roof.
Nicole Auerbach with The Athletic reported that the board voted on that the 12-team playoff would consist of the six conference champions, plus the next six at-large teams.
The 12-team CFP format will be the one that was initially proposed by the four-person working group. Six highest-ranked conference champions, six at-larges.
Source tells @TheAthletic that there are a lot of details left to work out to see if it can be implemented before 2026.

There are still a ton of details to iron out here, but we do know for sure that a 12-team College Football Playoff will be happening.
