The rest of the NFL might be hesitant to hire Eric Bieniemy, but the Kansas City Chiefs won’t bat an eye when it comes to signing him to a new deal.
Bieniemy’s current contract is set to expire following the conclusion of the 2020 NFL season, making him a free agent and able to sign elsewhere. But according to a new report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs intend to work out a new deal with Bieniemy.
Schefter says that the only reason that Kansas City hadn’t already worked out an extension for Bieniemy is that they expected him to receive a head-coaching job during this hiring cycle. With Bieniemy not receiving a job offer and Super Bowl preparation underway there wasn’t time to get a deal done. But fans should expect an agreement to be coming soon. Both Bieniemy and the Chiefs have a mutual interest in getting a deal done according to Schefter.
It all makes plenty of sense. Why would the Chiefs change anything up as they continue to have unprecedented success? Why would Bieniemy walk away from the chance to coach the most exciting quarterback in the NFL for anything less than a head-coaching job?
The 51-year-old Bieniemy got his start with the Chiefs in 2013, working as the team’s running back coach through the 2017 season. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018 when Patrick Mahomes took over the quarterback spot from Alex Smith. Bieniemy has held that position down ever since. The Chiefs’ offense has ranked first in the league twice during that span.
