New England Patriots defensive end Chase Winovich underwent sports hernia surgery in February, according to The Boston Globe.
The second-year linebacker has spent the offseason recovering from the surgery, and is back to lifting weights in preparation for the 2020 season. That’s good news with the Patriots losing outside linebackers Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy this offseason. New England may need Winovich to take on an increased role in the coming season.
After the Patriots drafted Winovich in the third round of the 2019 draft, he had 26 total tackles, 10 quarterback hits and 5.5 sacks while only playing 29% of the defensive snaps last season. New England added outside linebacker Brandon Copeland in free agency and it drafted Michigan’s Josh Uche and Alabama’s Anfernee Jennings this offseason to add to the position which includes Winovich, John Simon, Derek Rivers and Shilique Calhoun.
