According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Los Angeles Chargers have requested permission to interview San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh for their vacant head coaching position.
While it would be a massive loss for the 49ers if he departed for a head coaching job, San Francisco would receive a compensatory pick in the third round of the 2021 and 2022 drafts under the newly adjusted Rooney Rule.
For what it’s worth, the Chargers job may be the most desirable on the market. Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert looked like one of the best young signal callers in football, and the team is just three seasons removed from a 12-4 regular season.
Saleh is a hot name on the coaching carousel this year. He has already interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, and is also set to interview with the Jaguars and Lions.
