New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore will miss the rest of the 2020 season with a patrially torn quad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Gilmore’s knee is fine, even though it buckled when he suffered the injury in Week 15 against the Miami Dolphins. Gilmore will undergo surgery on his quad Tuesday.
The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year should be able to return to the field for “some portion of the offseason program,” per Rapoport.
Gilmore is a member of a deep Patriots secondary, which includes cornerbacks J.C. Jackson, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams and Myles Bryant. But there’s no doubt New England’s defense is a stronger unit with Gilmore on the field.
#Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore, the reigning defensive player of the year, suffered a partially torn quad, sources say. He’ll have surgery to repair it tomorrow. He should be able to participate in a some portion of the offseason program. No structural damage to his knee.

Gilmore is playing on a five-year, $65 million deal he signed in 2017. The deal expires after the 2021 season when he’s set to make $7.5 million in new money.
The Patriots have two games left in the season, with matchups against the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. New England is out of playoff contention.
