The Cavaliers are reportedly not ruling out drafting Ball should they land the No. 1 overall pick.

18-year-old LaMelo Ball has emerged as a strong candidate to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft given his ability to make plays and score on the floor.

Teams that project to be selecting near the top of the draft have shown interest to some degree in Ball with the Cleveland Cavaliers among those high on his game. In fact, they could be among the teams that would take him with the top pick.

Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer believes the Cavaliers would take Ball with the No. 1 overall pick based on the intel he has received. Fedor told 92.3 The Game in Cleveland that the Cavaliers believe Ball is the best player in the draft, via Jacob Rude of Lonzo Wire.

I think if they have the first overall pick, this is just me trying to read between the lines based on everything that I’ve heard, I think they would take LaMelo Ball because I think that they feel he’s the best player in the draft.

The Cavaliers, according to Fedor, would not rule out drafting Ball just because they have two other young guards in Collin Sexton and Darius Garland also on the roster. By that logic, the Cavaliers would be drafting the best player available versus drafting for need.

Of course, the NBA Draft Lottery was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic so the draft order has not yet been set. The Cavaliers held the second-worst record in the NBA prior to the season suspension and would have a 14% chance of winning the lottery.

The NBA Draft is still scheduled to take place on June 25 but the expectation is it will be postponed until September while the details of resuming the season are sorted out.
