Report: Cardinals to add former CFL punter to practice squad

Leone competed for the Cardinals’ punting job in 2017.

The Arizona Cardinals announced 14 players being added to their practice squad on Sunday. All 14 players had been previously cut by the team over the weekend.

There are two spots remaining, although one is reportedly going to former Houston Texans tight end Jordan Thomas.

The other is apparently going to be for a punter the Cardinals have had on their roster before.

According to Farhan Lalji, former CFL punter Richie Leone is signing with the Cardinals to be on their practice squad.

Leone has not yet made an NFL roster. He spent time with the Baltimore Ravens in the 2014 offseason and then with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2015 offseason. He also competed for the Cardinals’ punter job in the 2017 offseason with Matt Wile before they went and signed Andy Lee.

He played four seasons in the Canadian Football League, where he averaged 48.3 yards per punt. He also was a kicker for two seasons as well, giving the Cardinals an emergency punter or kicker in case of an injury or if either Andy Lee or Zane Gonzalez were to land on the COVID-19 reserve this season.
