Report: Cam Newton closing in on starting QB job with Patriots

The 2015 NFL MVP is setting his eyes squarely on the starting job with the New England Patriots.

Stop me if you have heard this before: Cam Newton is doing impressive things on the football field.

The former Auburn star and 2015 NFL MVP is reportedly pulling away in the battle for starting quarterback with the New England Patriots against fellow former Tiger Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.

Per Boston Herald:

Over a steamy morning practice Sunday, Newton took more snaps in team periods than any quarterback has so far this summer. While his increased opportunity has coincided with the fallout from Jarrett Stidham’s new injury, Newton ran the offense with greater command, completed 65% of his passes in competitive settings and continued to unlock more possibilities as a runner. The starting quarterback job is his to lose.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Newton is the man for this job. Signed on a one-year deal with the Patriots, the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner is out to prove the critics, and maybe the teams who wouldn’t sign him after getting released by the Carolina Panthers, wrong.
