Report: Bucs’ free-agent QB targets include Jacoby Brissett, Blaine Gabbert

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could sign a new veteran, or bring back a familiar face to compete with Kyle Trask for the starting QB job

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have several veteran free agent quarterbacks in their sights, including Jacoby Brissett and Blaine Gabbert, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud. The Bucs also have interest in QB Baker Mayfield per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Stroud also posits that Seahawks QB Drew Lock would be a “good fit,” likely due to working with new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales in Seattle.

While none of these passers are marquee names, the Bucs are not likely to be able to afford anything at the top end of the quarterback market. None of these players made more than $5 million against their respective team’s salary cap.

Brissett and Mayfield were the only two to take meaningful snaps last year, each starting at least 10 games. Brissett was arguably better, posting more yards and touchdowns, fewer interceptions, and better yards per attempt and average depth of target. However, Mayfield’s 2020 season was arguably more productive than any of Brissett’s over his career.

Gabbert has the institutional advantage if not a schematic one due to the impending change in Tampa’s offensive system. Conversely, Lock might be the most familiar with Tampa’s new offense but also has the least overall experience.
