Report: Browns quietly added no future protection to Deshaun Watson’s contract beyond 2023

There is a pathway out of the deal in the case of a suspension

It has been reported by FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer that there is no protection in the contract between quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns.

This is pertinent given the newest lawsuit filed against the quarterback last week, one that is under investigation by the NFL for a potential violation of the Personal Conduct Policy.

While there were some interpretations that the Browns removed a clause from Watson’s deal, that is not what Glazer is saying here. What Glazer is saying is that the original protection from future suspensions only lasted for the 2022-2023 seasons, the Browns did not add any more protections when they restructured the deal of Watson this fall.

This all remains theoretical still at this point, however, as the NFL has not made any ruling in this new case against Watson. However, if there is a suspension, the Browns will have a pathway toward voiding the rest of the guarantees in Watson’s contract.
