The Brooklyn Nets have been making moves all offseason in the pursuit of building a team capable of competing for a championship in the near future. Along the way, Brooklyn has a player on the roster who’s future on the team will be determined at a later point in time.

On Thursday, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the Nets and guard Edmond Sumner have agreed to push back the deadline for his 2023-24 salary of $2.24 million to be guaranteed. Brian Lewis of the New York Post later reported that the new deadline date was July 15. Per Spotrac, if Sumner was on the roster by July 5, 2023, his salary for the following season would be guaranteed as per his contract.

At this point, because of the additions that Brooklyn has made throughout this offseason, especially at guard, it’s possible that the Nets needed more time to figure out if Sumner has a role for the organization next season. While Brooklyn lost guards like Joe Harris and Patty Mills, they have added guards in Dennis Smith Jr. and Lonnie Walker IV.

Sumner, 27, averaged 7.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 46.1% from the field and 35.6% from three-point land last season off the bench.
