One day after their fifth consecutive losing season ended, the Denver Broncos announced that they would be parting ways with head coach Vic Fangio. During his three-year tenure with the Broncos, Fangio led Denver to a cumulative 19-30 record.

Speculation about who will be the next head coach of the Broncos began immediately and reports soon surfaced on who the Broncos had requested interviews from.

On Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweeted that the Broncos were requesting permission to interview Eric Bieniemy.

Bieniemy, currently in his fourth season as offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, was a star running back at Colorado from 1987-90 and was a part of the Buffs’ only National Championship team in 1990. He is still the all-time leader in rushing yards (3,940), all-purpose yards (4,351) and touchdowns (42) for Colorado.

If Bieniemy did land the Broncos job, it would be the first head coaching position of his coaching career. He served as the running backs coach at Colorado from 2001-02 before assuming the same role on Karl Dorrell’s UCLA staff from 2003-2005. Bieniemy then made the jump to the NFL in 2006 with the Minnesota Vikings as an assistant.

Bieniemy returned to the Buffs’ program as offensive coordinator from 2011-2012 and then joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013 as their running backs coach. He was promoted to his current position as offensive coordinator of the Chiefs in 2018.

As a coach, Bieniemy’s leadership qualities have been highly touted and he could bring a much needed offensive spark to the Broncos.
