The 2021-22 season is approaching quickly for the Philadelphia 76ers and they have one final issue that they have to address and that is the Ben Simmons situation.
The Sixers tried to trade Simmons in the past to the Houston Rockets for James Harden before he was dealt to the Brooklyn Nets and after another underwhelming postseason run, the Sixers have been taking more trade calls on Simmons as they look to find an upgrade at the position.
For Simmons, this is apparently the last straw. There have been rumblings that Simmons will not show up to training camp in order to get a deal done and it appears that those thoughts are true and that Simmons is fully done with the Sixers.
Per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Simmons has told the team that he wants out as Pompey reports:
In a meeting with the 76ers last week in Los Angeles, Simmons told team co-managing partner Josh Harris, president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, general manager Elton Brand and coach Doc Rivers that he no longer wants to remain a Sixer, according to multiple sources.
Sources said the three-time All-Star also does not intend to report to training camp.
The Sixers can, of course, decide to fine Simmons if he does not show up to camp, but that does not matter to Simmons as he has four years and $147 million left on his deal. It is not a matter of losing money at this point, this is about just wanting to leave the team and look for something different.
As talented as Simmons is, his shortcomings on the offensive end continue to be a big issue for this team. He makes an impact out on the floor, but his refusal to shoot the ball continues to be a big issue, and the Sixers have not been able to overcome them. At this point, it might be better for both parties involved to just go their separate ways.
