The Indianapolis Colts are a team that many believe is looking to trade up with the Chicago Bears for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
While it’s impossible to know exactly what the Bears will want in return for the top pick in this year’s draft, it appears we have gotten some insight into what Chicago views as a fair price for teams wanting to move up.
According to Peter King of NBC Sports, Bears general manager Ryan Poles is confident he can swap first-round picks in 2023 while adding additional first-round picks in 2024 and 2025.
[Poles] left little doubt the Bears will trade the first overall pick and said he’d spoken to three teams at the Combine about a deal. (He wouldn’t identify them.) He said he had enough conversations about a deal to know in swapping first-round picks this year he can get “a ’24 one and a ’25 one” in a major package for a trade.
If the Bears truly are seeking two additional first-round picks in a trade for the No. 1 overall pick, it’s difficult to see the Colts moving that kind of draft capital to move up three spots.
Chris Ballard would have to have zero doubt the player they move up for will be the face of the franchise for the next 15 years, and we’re likely not going to know how they feel about these prospects until draft day arrives. Even then, it may remain a mystery.
But considering how much Ballard likes his draft picks, moving two additional first-rounders probably won’t be in the cards for the Colts. It’s risky playing the waiting game, but they may have to take their chances if Poles is dead set on receiving that kind of package.
That package may change slightly depending on where a team is trading from. For instance, it would be an extremely expensive trade for the Houston Texans who sit just one spot behind the Bears. They likely wouldn’t have to part ways with two future first-rounders along with the No. 2 pick.
We’ll see what happens over the next month leading up to the draft as the big boards start to come together, and we’ll see if the Colts are willing to pay a massive haul for the No. 1 pick.
