The Chicago Bears have never fired a head coach mid-season, and that might figure to the case this season even as Matt Nagy’s future in Chicago appears bleak.
Nagy might not get the axe during the season, but the belief is Nagy’s career is done with the Bears following three disappointing seasons after a 12-4 record to lead off his tenure.
According to CBS Sports’ Jason LaCanfora, the Bears are expected to consider some high-profile offensive coaches to replace Nagy, who is expected to be fired after this season.
Among the names are Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDanielS and Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
If they make a move, the Bears are expected to consider Tampa offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, among others, and it has been well-known throughout the industry for years how high Bears ownership is on Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who numerous NFL teams have pursued in recent years. However, sources said that Fitzgerald, who recently signed a big extension to remain at the school he also played for, would not be interested in a jump to the Bears.
The report doesn’t come as a surprise considering Leftwich, McDaniels and Daboll are some high-profile coaching candidates heading into the offseason.
While the Bears might not seem like a prime destination considering ownership and the team’s struggles, rookie quarterback Justin Fields is a big reason why a candidate would want to coach in Chicago.
One of the new rules this season is that teams can begin interviewing candidates for coaching positions two weeks before the end of the season. If the Bears parted ways with Nagy before the end of the season, they could get a head start on their coaching search.
But a big question about the Bears’ head coaching situation also stems on the status of general manager Ryan Pace, whose future is more up-in-the-air than Nagy. If Chicago were to part ways with Pace, the Bears would likely hire a new GM before the head coach.
