The year was 2006. The New York Mets were facing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, a series they would sweep to go on to face the St. Louis Cardinals (don’t ask Mets fans about what happened next, but here’s a clue: Carlos Beltran).
With two men on, the Dodgers’ Russell Martin hit a double off the right field wall, and Jeff Kent was legging out to get home for a run.
That’s where Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca was, and he grabbed the throw and tagged out the second baseman. A pretty typical baseball play, right?
Except the SECOND Dodgers runner — J.D. Drew decided he wanted to score too, with Lo Duca’s back to the play. But Lo Duca tagged out Drew for a wild double play.
Umpire John Hirschbeck made the out call on Kent, but the look on the ump’s face told Lo Duca something else was up.
“He sort of gave me a ‘He’s out but you’d better watch out because somebody else is coming’ look,” Lo Duca said. “I turned around, and he was right there.”
