Former University of Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton died Friday.
He was 60.
Hamilton had been battling cancer and was in line to receive a liver transplant.
He was hired as Tennessee’s athletics director on May 10, 2003 and served in the role until June 7, 2011.
“I’ve always felt the University of Tennessee athletics director’s job was one of the best positions in the nation,” Hamilton said when he was hired. “When I came to Tennessee in 1992, I was well aware of the great tradition the university had — from Gen. Neyland through Bob Woodruff and to Doug Dickey. I appreciate the confidence Dr. Shumaker has expressed by giving me this opportunity.”
