Ref for Nets-Pelicans explains decision on final play of regulation

The crew chief for the Nets-Pelicans matchup on Tuesday explained why the referees could not review the odd play at the end of regulation.

The Brooklyn Nets weren’t the only ones who were sloppy during Tuesday’s game. The New Orleans Pelicans did not shoot well, which helped lead to a 108-101 Nets win.

But there was another group involved with the game who had a bit of a hiccup: the refs.

At the end of regulation, Spencer Dinwiddie threw up a deep 3-pointer with the clock winding down. Not only did he miss the shot, he missed the rim altogether. This led to the shot clock buzzer sounding off with a small amount of time left in the game.

The Pelicans played through because no whistle was blown, though one clearly should have been.

After the game, NBA crew chief Kevin Scott explained what the crew saw on the play:

At the time, the crew was reasonably certain the ball made contact with the rim.

When asked why the refs couldn’t look the play over, Scott stated:

It was not reviewable because play was not immediately blown dead after the change of possession, therefore the window to review expired

Needless to say, Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry wasn’t happy with the way everything transpired. He started his postgame press conference by expressing his dissatisfaction with the officials:
