Redskins need to lock down Kevin O’Connell as their OC of the future

O’Connell has been linked to Josh McDaniels, who’s likely to become a head coach somewhere in the NFL, but the Redskins can’t let him go.

The Washington Redskins need to take advantage of their pertinent decision making and lock down the assets they have in house.

We’re talking about offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who has reshaped the Redskins offense around young talent like QB Dwayne Haskins, RB Derrius Guice, and WRs Terry McLaurin and Steven Sims Jr.

With Ron Rivera expected to be named as the next Redskins head coach later today, Washington now needs to cement O’Connell’s spot with the team and keep him around as the offensive coordinator going forward. Otherwise, he could end up like numerous other offensive coaches who have left Washington to find greener grass elsewhere.

While the Black Monday coaching carousel continues to churn, Josh McDaniels, the OC for the New England Patriots, has had his name connected to many open head coaching jobs in the NFL. It’s been mentioned that, should McDaniels choose to take over the HC job with the Cleveland Browns or New York Giants, he could look to fill out his coaching staff with people he’s close with. That includes O’Connell, who looks at McDaniels as a mentor who taught him a lot of the schemes he is using in Washington.

Of course, the Redskins have O’Connell under contract and could block him from being able to leap teams and join another budding offense, and that’s exactly what they need to do. Washington has a really talented offensive mind, and they need to hold on to him. Give KOC control of the offense, pay him the money he deserves, and ensure a bright future for your young players. You’ve made several good decisions already today, Dan Snyder, why stop now?
