Redskins had O.J. Howard-for-Trent Williams trade discussions before talks fell through

The Redskins discussed an O.J. Howard-for-Trent Williams trade with the Buccaneers months ago, but talks reportedly fell through.

One of the most appealing trade packages that the Washington Redskins could receive for LT Trent Williams at the moment comes from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have a young and dynamic TE who they might be willing to give up in order to secure the left side of their offensive line — O.J. Howard.

Now that the Bucs have Rob Gronkowski on the team, they have a surplus of tight ends, and will likely move off of one of them in the near future. A Williams-for-Howard trade, with some sprinkles added in on either side to get the deal done, seems like something that would make sense for both teams.

Well, according to ESPN’s Jenna Laine, it’s a deal that was close to happening earlier this offseason, before talks fell through.

“A source told ESPN that the Bucs were in discussions to trade Howard two months ago to the Washington Redskins in exchange for offensive tackle Trent Williams, but talks fell through,” Laine wrote on Wednesday.

If talks were started once, they can definitely be started again, especially now that the Bucs may be more willing to move off of Howard with another veteran TE in the mix. As the NFL Draft draws nearer, expect both sides to be more eager to get a deal done going forward, and prepare yourself to see Williams potentially be on the move.
