Redskins cap space update after Jordan Reed’s release

Here’s the cap-space outlook.

The Washington Redskins did the predictable this week in cutting tight end Jordan Reed.

Ron Rivera and the front office weren’t exactly hurting for cap space when they made the move, as it had more to do with Reed’s injury history than anything else.

But it sure doesn’t hurt for the organization to clear out a bad contract and free up more space in the process.

With the release, the Redskins cleared up $8.5 million in space immediately. That added to the prior total means the team has about $62 million in cap space, a borderline top-five number in the NFL right now.

Not too shabby considering it seemed like last year’s splurge on Landon Collins was pushing it as it was. And boasting $60-plus million right now even while saddled with the Alex Smith contract is downright impressive.

Now let’s see what Rivera does with all that room.
