Penalties. Ejections. Muffed picks. Puzzling play calls. Spirit-crushing turnovers. The Red Wolves dug deep into Chagrin’s Hip Pocket to find every and any measure to lose the game. But when the rubber pellets settled, the Red Wolves had somehow managed a victory over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
Everybody seemed to be in on the crime. Layne Hatcher tossed a pair of picks, one to a defensive back who was all by his lonesome. Special teams contributed a fumble – adding to the four offered by the offense. The defense, made even more shorthanded by Darrean Jackson’s ejection following two unsportsmanlike penalties, carried the team as best they could, making big plays that included a pair of picks, one for a score. It wasn’t enough to lose, however.
With less than 3:00 on the clock, the Chants took a 27-21 lead after collecting another turnover. But the Red Wolves’ 2-minutes offense resulted in a Layne Hatcher to Kirk Merritt score with only half a minute remaining. The defense shut the lid on the game 15 seconds later, securing another year of bowl eligibility for Arkansas State.
A-State’s Omar Bayless chipped in 102 yards and a TD, while CJ Marable for Coastal racked up 142 yards and a score.
