Phillip Lindsay is getting a fresh start with the Houston Texans.
The former 2018 Denver Broncos undrafted free agent barely got over 500 rushing yards last season despite starting his career off with consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns, including earning a Pro Bowl selection his rookie year.
A toe injury sustained in Week 1 plagued Lindsay throughout 2020, competing in 11 games, starting in 8, and rushing 118 times for 502 yards and a touchdown.
The 26-year-old from Denver is feeling healthy after the Texans’ eight weeks offseason workouts.
“For me, I want to be explosive,” Lindsay told reporters on June 9 on a Zoom call. “That’s who I am. I’ve never been one to need a bunch of carries to get where I need to go. I want to be able to be explosive, I want to help my team put points on the board and just do my part and help each other out.”
Lindsay possibly won’t be getting a swath of carries as he is one of seven running backs on the Texans’ roster. Furthermore, Houston also has other big-name backs in former All-Pro David Johnson and three-time Pro Bowler Mark Ingram.
When Lindsay is in the game, he knows that he will have to run inside when asked, a task seemingly daunting for a smaller back like Lindsay, who stands at 5-8, 190 pounds.
Said Lindsay: “If you want to be a running back, you’ve got to be able to run inside, inside-out. That’s just how I take my game. I know how to run inside, I can run outside. I just want to put everything together and be an all-around running back this year. I make my money inside and I know that I have the speed to be outside. For me, it’s just about getting comfortable with the plays, getting familiar with the offensive line and just be explosive.”
The former Colorado product has tallied 2,550 yards and 17 touchdowns on 534 career carries for a 4.8 yards per carry.
