The MLB got it’s own version of “what is a catch?” like it was the NFL.
On Thursday, with Gleyber Torres at the plate, and a pair of New York Yankees on first and third with two outs, he hit a shallow fly ball to center field. If that ball drops, the Yankees tie the game at five.
But it didn’t. Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Jose Caballero caught it with an unreal over-the-shoulder grab … but as he was celebrating, the ball popped out.
Was it a catch? If this was the NFL, you might argue no. But umpires said yes, and the game was over.
So of course Pete Fairbanks — the pitcher on the mound when that happened — had to make a “Dez caught it” joke:
