After several attempts, the Baltimore Ravens have finally landed a free-agent wide receiver. According to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec, the Ravens are signing Sammy Watkins to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million.
Baltimore has been active in free agency but unable to land one of the several wide receivers theyve been interested in. Both JuJu Smith-Schuster and T.Y. Hilton re-signed with their former teams despite the Ravens offering more money. However, in a down market for wide receivers, Baltimore nabs Watkins for a relative steal.
The Ravens get the outside possession reciever they truly needed in Watkins, who has been more of a complementary option over his time with the Kansas City Chiefs. Over the last three years with the Chiefs, Watkins caught 129 passes for 1,613 yards and eight touchdowns. More importantly for Baltimore, Watkins is a relatively sure-handed, big-bodied receiver who has shown an ability to win one-on-one matchups in the past. When paired opposite Marquise Brown and Mark Andrews, Watkins could have a solid year statistically despite the Ravens’ run-first offensive philosophy.
Though Baltimore has added Watkins, they could still be lookong to add more receiving help in the 2021 NFL draft.
