Raptors’ Scottie Barnes’ thumb injury not considered serious

Scottie Barnes missed his first game of the season on Monday due to a right thumb sprain as the Toronto Raptors defeated the New York Knicks for their fourth straight win.

Barnes initially suffered the injury on Saturday in a win over the Indiana Pacers. The Raptors announced afterward that X-rays were negative on the thumb as head coach Nick Nurse said the injury is not considered to be serious.

(It is) just a sprain. We don’t really have a timeline on it. It is a little tender and sore but doesn’t seem awfully bad. I think they’re still getting through some of the testing, as well.

Barnes has emerged as perhaps the top rookie to this point of the season, averaging 18.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and two assists in seven games. He leads all rookie players in scoring, rebounding and is second in double-doubles with two.

The team does not currently have a timetable for Barnes to return, as Nurse said, but with the Raptors playing on Wednesday and Friday, it is possible he can play this week. He was seen doing some shooting on Monday but may still need a few days before coming back.
