Here is Texas’s No. 4 rival in football
Texas Tech Red Raiders
The main reason they are one of the Longhorn’s top rivals: The rivalry gets its name from the sterling silver boot spurs that the chancellor of the opposing university awards to the victor of this gauntlet. Since the 1960 college football season, The Battle For The Chancellor’s Spurs has been played every year since then but will unfortunately not continue for the 2024 season.
It is not a secret that Texas Tech fans and alums generally speaking do not like Texas and really enjoy when they have had an opportunity to defeat the Longhorns. Texas has bigger rivals and the Longhorns don’t get much joy in comparison to Red Raider fans when their team wins in this rivalry but Texas fans hate the fact that they have lost games to Texas Tech in the past.
This rivalry will be put on pause as the Longhorns now in the SEC have not scheduled Texas Tech in any of their future schedules but hopefully, down the road, this rivalry will resume as the students of both universities are passionate about this rivalry more so than older alums of Texas are for this rivalry for example.
The history between these two football programs: The rivalry dates back to 1928 and Texas won 15 of the first 16 games in this in-state rivalry. In seven of those victories, the Longhorns shut out the Red Raiders as Texas dominated this rivalry from the beginning. Texas Tech has its moments winning back-to-back games in 67 and 68 and then winning two of three from 74 to 76.
In the 1980s, this rivalry started to pick up more steam when the Red Raiders defeated the Longhorns four times and did well against the Longhorns towards the end of the decade. Then in the ’90s, Texas Tech defeated Texas four out of six times from 93 to 98. However like early in this rivalry, the Longhorns since 1999 have won 20 games in this in-state rivalry compared to the Red Raider’s five wins during that same period.
Distance between these two higher institutions of higher learning: 362 miles separates these two schools in the state of Texas.
Most memorable game in this rivalry: This rivalry had some very memorable games such as the Longhorn’s overtime victory over the Red Raiders in 2020 and Texas’s road victory in Lubbock in 2012 but as painful as a loss it was for Longhorns fans, the 2008 defeat when Texas was ranked #1 and Texas Tech #8 was the most memorable game in this rivalry.
The last game they played one another and their next scheduled game: Texas dominated Texas Tech in the last game they played one another in this historical rivalry as the Longhorns at home, defeated the Red Raiders by a final score of 57-7. Unfortunately, these teams do not have any scheduled games between them in football.
